Our experience working with clients helped us identify two areas in which many facilities lack a common knowledge base: (1) Integrating a Process Safety Mindset and (2) The Basics of Relief System Design. The Provenance team now offers and facilitates these two courses regularly with our clients who want to provide their teams a foundational knowledge and understanding of the role PSM plays in daily operations as well as the intricacy of Relief Systems Design.
Integrating a Process Safety Mindset
A Pre-Built PSM Course

In this course you will discover how PSM affects and is affected by your work. You will explore many of the attitudes, perspectives and philosophies connected to PSM. As a learner, you will engage in activities including case studies, hands-on examples, and break-out discussions designed to help you achieve and promote a process safety mindset.
Objectives:
After completion, you will be able to:
- Relate process safety to other safety elements
- Identify the “impact points” of plant changes
- Recognize how broadly PSM is impacted by your daily activities
- Evaluate consequences of hazard scenarios in your area of focus
- Integrate process safety information into your operating and design decisions
- Adopt a team perspective of your role in managing process safety in relationship to others in your facility
- Assume ownership for your personal role in process safety management
Target audience:
Operators, Maintenance & Instrument Technicians, Engineers and other facility personnel who are affected by Process Safety Management (PSM) guidelines. A basic understanding of process equipment and operation is required; however this course is suitable for recent new hires as well as experienced employees.
Details:
This course is offered off-site as a 2-day (1.4 CEU’s) course. Custom courses are also available. We are happy to address your company’s objectives and training duration requests as well as incorporate site specific materials with a custom on-site training package.
The Instructors:
Mr. Nonhof holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. He has nearly 20 years of experience in the petrochemical industry. He began his career with BASF and held positions in project engineering and operations.
After BASF, he worked for Berwanger, Inc., an engineering consulting company based in Houston. At Berwanger, Mr. Nonhof served in a variety of line management positions. During his tenure with Berwanger, he worked for multiple multinational oil and gas companies providing Process Safety Management (PSM) services. In 2006, he co-founded Provenance Consulting, LLC.
Mrs. McDuffee comes to Provenance with seventeen years of experience in the refining/chemical industry. She has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University. Her eleven years with a major refining company included project design, unit support and distillation consulting roles.
She completed her Masters in Adult Education and Training with Colorado State University in 2011 while working for Northern Oklahoma College as an engineering instructor. In 2010 she became the Process Technology Program Director and worked closely with local refineries and chemical plants to ensure the curriculum matched the needs of the industry. Sarah is currently the Training Coordinator at Provenance Consullting where she is passionate about creating meaningful learning opportunities for professionals.
Relief Systems Design Course
The Basics

In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of relief device and system design. This course will expose you to industry standards, best practices, and common pitfalls in pressure relief design. As a learner, you will engage in activities including case studies, hands-on examples, and break-out discussions designed to increase your proficiency and awareness in relief system design and auditing.
Objectives
After completing the course, you will be able to:
- Identify and adhere to Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices for relief system design
- Describe a typical workflow for a relief system design
- Design a relief device
- List design considerations for relief disposal systems
- Adhere to standards for relief device installation
Target Audience
Engineers involved in designing, reviewing, installing, or maintaining relief devices. A basic understanding of process equipment and operations is required.

The Instructor
Justin Phillips has over eight years of onshore and offshore oil & gas process engineering and project execution experience. His technical experience includes process design with specialty in flare and relief systems.
Justin is the Relief Systems Line of Service Manager at Provenance Consulting, LLC. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
